How to convert AVIF to JPG

  1. Drop your AVIF files on the box, click Choose images, or paste. Up to 30 files can be converted together, and other formats in the same batch are converted too.
  2. JPG is already selected under Convert to. Quality 90% keeps the image visually identical.
  3. Each file is converted in turn; the list shows the new size and any notes. Drag the preview divider to compare the original with the JPG copy.
  4. Download files one by one or click Download all (ZIP).

What is AVIF?

AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec. It compresses very well: web.dev reports savings of more than 50% compared with JPEG in its examples, which is why more websites and image CDNs serve AVIF. Saving images from those sites, or exporting from newer cameras and apps, gives you .avif files that some editors, office tools and upload forms cannot open yet.

Pixdesk relies on your browser to decode AVIF. Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari can display it; if your browser cannot, the file is marked as failed in the list and the rest of the batch continues.

Why there is no JPG to AVIF converter here (yet)

Pixdesk saves files with the encoders built into your browser. As of October 2026, Chrome does not encode AVIF from a canvas: asking for image/avif silently returns a PNG, and MDN’s documentation lists no browser support for AVIF output. Rather than mislabel a PNG as AVIF, Pixdesk only shows an AVIF output option when your browser really produces an AVIF file.

SampleSize
AVIF original, 1200 × 8004.8 KB
JPG at 90%29 KB
JPG at 80%smaller, with slightly more artifacts

A JPG copy is normally several times larger than the AVIF, as the sample shows. That is the price of compatibility, not a loss of quality.

Privacy

Everything happens inside this browser tab. Pixdesk reads your files with the browser’s own image decoder, redraws them on a canvas in a background worker and saves the new file with the browser’s encoder. There is no upload endpoint on pixdesk.cc, and the page makes no network request while it works. You can check that yourself in two minutes with your browser’s Network panel.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert AVIF to JPG?

Drop the AVIF files here, keep JPG selected and download. Up to 30 files can be converted together and saved as a ZIP.

Why can’t I open AVIF files?

AVIF is newer than JPG and some programs and devices do not support it yet. JPG opens everywhere.

Why is the JPG so much bigger?

AVIF compresses far better than JPG; web.dev reports more than 50% savings in its tests. The same picture simply needs more bytes as a JPG.

Does converting AVIF to JPG lose quality?

JPG is lossy, but at 90% the difference is not visible in normal viewing. Compare with the slider at 100% zoom.

What happens to transparency in AVIF?

JPG cannot store it, so transparent areas are filled with the background color you choose, white by default.

Can Pixdesk convert JPG to AVIF?

Only when your browser can encode AVIF. Current Chrome cannot, so the option stays hidden rather than producing a mislabelled file.

Can I convert AVIF to PNG instead?

Yes. Choose PNG under Convert to; the PNG keeps transparency and every decoded pixel.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Your browser decodes and converts the files locally.
