How to convert PNG to WebP

  1. Drop your PNG files on the box, click Choose images, or paste. Up to 30 files can be converted together, and other formats in the same batch are converted too.
  2. WebP is already selected under Convert to. Quality 90% keeps edges crisp; lower it for photos.
  3. Each file is converted in turn; the list shows the new size and any notes. Drag the preview divider to compare the original with the WebP copy.
  4. Download files one by one or click Download all (ZIP).

Why WebP for the web

WebP was designed by Google as a smaller replacement for both PNG and JPG. Google’s documentation reports that lossless WebP images are 26% smaller than PNGs, and that lossy WebP with transparency is typically about 3× smaller than PNG. Every current major browser displays WebP, so it is a safe choice for websites and web apps.

Our sample graphic, a 1200 × 800 PNG with a transparent background, is 34 KB. As WebP at 90% it is 10 KB, and at 80% under 9 KB, with the transparency intact.

Browser support for saving WebP

Pixdesk uses your browser’s built-in encoder. Chrome, Edge and Firefox can save WebP. Safari cannot: it displays WebP but its canvas encoder falls back to PNG, as MDN documents for unsupported types. If you open this page in Safari, Pixdesk tells you and marks WebP as unsupported, and a file saved as PNG keeps its real .png extension so nothing is mislabelled. Use Chrome, Edge or Firefox for WebP output.

When to keep PNG: if the image goes into a tool or a platform that does not accept WebP, such as some email clients and older office software.

Privacy

Everything happens inside this browser tab. Pixdesk reads your files with the browser’s own image decoder, redraws them on a canvas in a background worker and saves the new file with the browser’s encoder. There is no upload endpoint on pixdesk.cc, and the page makes no network request while it works. You can check that yourself in two minutes with your browser’s Network panel.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert PNG to WebP?

Drop your PNG files here, keep WebP selected and download. The files are converted in your browser, up to 30 at a time.

Does WebP keep transparency?

Yes. WebP supports an alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas from the PNG are kept.

How much smaller is WebP than PNG?

Google reports lossless WebP about 26% smaller than PNG. Lossy WebP, which Pixdesk uses at the quality you choose, is usually much smaller still.

Is the conversion lossless?

At the default 90% it is lossy but visually very close. Very simple graphics may look identical at any setting; check the preview at 100% zoom.

Why does Safari save PNG instead of WebP?

Safari’s canvas cannot encode WebP. Pixdesk detects this and keeps the file as PNG with the correct extension. Use Chrome, Edge or Firefox for WebP output.

Can every browser open WebP images?

All current major browsers display WebP. Some older desktop software and email clients do not, so keep a PNG copy if you need one.

Can I convert many PNG files at once?

Yes, up to 30 per batch, downloaded together as a ZIP.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Pixdesk runs entirely in your browser and has no upload server.
