How to convert JPG to PNG
- Drop your JPG or JPEG files on the box, click Choose images, or paste. Up to 30 files can be converted together, and other formats in the same batch are converted too.
- PNG is already selected under Convert to. Choose Lossless to keep every pixel, or Smart for a smaller 256-color PNG.
- Each file is converted in turn; the list shows the new size and any notes. Drag the preview divider to compare the original with the PNG copy.
- Download files one by one or click Download all (ZIP).
What converting to PNG does and does not do
PNG is a lossless format: once your image is a PNG, saving it again does not add new compression damage. That is useful when you are about to edit a photo several times, add text, or cut out a background in another tool. Some upload forms and print workflows also simply require PNG.
What PNG cannot do is undo JPG compression that already happened. Blocky areas or smudged edges in the JPG stay exactly as they are in the PNG. And PNG does not make the background transparent by itself; a JPG has no transparency to keep, so the PNG starts fully opaque.
Expect a bigger file
JPG throws away detail to save space; PNG keeps everything. A converted photo is therefore much larger. Our 499 KB sample JPG became a 2.3 MB lossless PNG, almost five times the size.
| Output | Sample size | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Original JPG | 499 KB | Sharing and the web |
| PNG, lossless | 2.35 MB | Editing and exact archiving |
| PNG, Smart 256 colors | 663 KB | Screenshots and graphics saved as JPG |
If the goal is a smaller web image rather than an editable master, convert to WebP instead: Google measured lossless WebP 26% smaller than PNG and lossy WebP 25–34% smaller than JPG. See JPG to WebP.
Privacy
Everything happens inside this browser tab. Pixdesk reads your files with the browser’s own image decoder, redraws them on a canvas in a background worker and saves the new file with the browser’s encoder. There is no upload endpoint on pixdesk.cc, and the page makes no network request while it works. You can check that yourself in two minutes with your browser’s Network panel.
The PNG files carry no EXIF metadata, so camera details and GPS coordinates from the JPG are left out.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a JPG to PNG?
Drop the JPG on this page with PNG selected and download the result. You can convert up to 30 JPG files at once and save them as a ZIP.
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG keeps the image exactly as it is, including any JPG artifacts. It only prevents further loss when you edit and save again.
Why is my PNG bigger than the JPG?
PNG is lossless and stores every pixel, while JPG discards detail to stay small. A PNG photo is often three to six times larger.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG is fully opaque. You need an editing tool to remove a background.
What is Smart PNG?
Smart mode reduces the image to at most 256 colors with light dithering, which makes PNG files much smaller. It suits screenshots and graphics; keep Lossless for photos.
Is the conversion done on my device?
Yes. Pixdesk converts in your browser and never uploads the files.
Is metadata removed?
Yes. The new PNG contains pixels only, without EXIF camera or GPS data.
Can I convert JPEG files with the .jpeg extension?
Yes. JPG and JPEG are the same format, and both extensions work.
