How to convert images to JPG

  1. Drop your files on the box, click Choose images, or paste. You can mix formats in the same batch: HEIC photos from an iPhone, PNG screenshots, WebP images saved from websites, AVIF, GIF and BMP files.
  2. JPG is already selected under Convert to. Set the quality (90% by default) and the background color used where an image is transparent.
  3. Files are converted one after another. Each row shows the original format, the new size and any notes, and the before/after slider shows exactly what changed.
  4. Download single files or Download all (ZIP). File names keep their original name with a .jpg ending.

What happens to each format

JPG is the most widely accepted image format, but it has no transparency, no animation and only lossy compression. This is what that means for each kind of file you might add:

Your fileWhat the JPG getsSize compared with the original
HEIC / HEIF (iPhone)The full photo, upright. Safari opens HEIC itself; in Chrome, Edge and Firefox Pixdesk loads the open-source heic2any decoder the first time you add a HEIC file.Usually larger, because HEIC compresses better: our 9.6 KB sample became 34 KB at 90%
PNGTransparent areas are filled with the background color you choose (white by default).Much smaller for photos; about the same for flat graphics (our 34 KB sample graphic became 31 KB)
WebPTransparency filled; for an animated WebP, the first frame only.About the same at 90% (our 386 KB sample became 384 KB)
AVIFThe decoded picture, if your browser can open AVIF; transparency filled.Usually larger, as AVIF is a newer, more efficient format
GIFA still JPG of the first frame, with transparency filled.Often larger for simple graphics; JPG suits photos better
BMPThe same picture, compressed.Much smaller: BMP is usually uncompressed
JPGA re-encoded copy. Only do this to change quality or strip metadata.Depends on the quality you pick

Pixdesk opens images with your browser’s own decoder (plus heic2any for HEIC). Files the browser cannot open, such as camera RAW files, Photoshop PSD and usually TIFF and SVG, show “This file could not be opened as an image” in the list instead of producing a broken JPG; the rest of the batch carries on. Export those from the program that made them first.

Choosing the JPG quality

QualityUse it for
90–95%Archiving, printing, or files you will edit again
80–85%Email, sharing and most websites
60–75%Small previews, or when a form has a strict size limit

The quality number is not a percentage of the original. It tells the JPG encoder how much fine detail it may discard. Above about 90% the file grows quickly for little visible gain. If a form needs a hard limit, convert here and then use Compress to 100 KB or another target size.

Photos, orientation and metadata

Phone photos often store their rotation in EXIF instead of rotating the pixels. Pixdesk applies that rotation while decoding, so the JPG is the right way up in every app. The new file contains only pixels: camera model, date and GPS location from EXIF are not copied. That is good for privacy when you share photos; if you need to keep the capture date, keep your originals as well. To check a photo for location data first, use Remove EXIF data, which lists what it found.

Privacy

Everything happens inside this browser tab. Pixdesk reads your files with the browser’s own image decoder, redraws them on a canvas in a background worker and saves the new file with the browser’s encoder. There is no upload endpoint on pixdesk.cc, and the page makes no network request while it works. You can check that yourself in two minutes with your browser’s Network panel.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert different image formats to JPG at the same time?

Yes. Add up to 30 files in any mix of HEIC, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP and JPG. They are all converted with the same quality and background settings.

Why is my JPG bigger than the HEIC or AVIF original?

HEIC and AVIF compress better than JPG, so the same photo needs more bytes as a JPG. That is expected. Lower the quality to 80% if you need smaller files.

What happens to transparent backgrounds?

JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with the background color you choose. White is the default. Convert to PNG or WebP instead if you need to keep transparency.

Can I convert an animated GIF or WebP to JPG?

Only the first frame is converted, because JPG holds a single still image.

Does it convert RAW, PSD, SVG or TIFF files?

Generally no. Pixdesk opens images with your browser, which cannot read camera RAW or PSD files and usually not TIFF or SVG either. Such files are marked as not opened in the list. Export them to JPG or PNG from the program that made them.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Conversion runs inside your browser tab. Pixdesk has no upload endpoint, and you can confirm with the Verify no upload guide.

Is the photo date and location kept?

No. The JPG contains only pixels, so EXIF data such as the capture date, camera and GPS location are removed.

What quality should I use?

Start with 90% for photos you want to keep, or 80–85% for sharing. Compare with the before and after slider at 100% zoom before downloading.
